7/25/2023 0 Comments Horizon zero dawn map in real life![]() ![]() In Death Stranding, bridges are godsends and worth planning entire routes around if they can keep Sam Porter Bridges out of even the gentlest currents. ![]() Meanwhile, in Death Stranding, the consequences for pursuing that kind of video game-like convenience are stress, failure, and death. It looked stupid and felt wrong, but it was faster than taking the intended route, and there were never any consequences for discarding the reality of the world in pursuit of maximum convenience. I would ford rivers because the designer-placed bridge was 10 whole meters upstream, and I often used Aloy’s awkward jump to clamber up sheer mountain faces that were obviously supposed to be impassable. When I played Horizon I was constantly ignoring its artisanally designed paths to bushwhack straight from point A to point B. ![]() But the shortest distance between two points is a straight line. Its points of interest are placed along winding, scenic footpaths, spaced just far enough apart to naturally generate the game’s desired rhythms of combat and exploration. Horizon Zero Dawn might not ever fully come true, but it does remind us that humanity is only alive as long as the Earth is, too.The world of Horizon Zero Dawn is elegantly designed. In a message to NBC News, the leader of the submarine project said that while these devices could curb emissions, "to stop global warming we still have to reduce carbon emissions throughout the world." This is true of these two projects as well as hundreds of others in development right now scientific advancements may help us counteract the negative effects that humanity has had on the environment, but they cannot fully replace other major changes, like the switch from fossil fuels to renewable energy. And even then, it doesn't work as well as they expected. Society does manage to reform after the collapse of civilization, but only due to the scientists who worked tirelessly to make it happen. Horizon Zero Dawn provides a cautiously optimistic view of life on Earth with a healthy dose of warnings sprinkled in. These days, the line between fact and fiction seems to be becoming more and more blurred, as the scientific inventions designed to combat climate change are starting to look awfully familiar - and for fans of Horizon Zero Dawn, awfully ominous. You might come across the sidewalk in London, which turns kinetic energy into electricity, or the plant walls on Mexico City's highways. Just a quick Google search will provide dozens of examples of innovative technology created to generate green energy or help clean the planet. The major focus of their research is often the most pressing long-term danger humanity is staring down every day: climate change. Meanwhile, scientists have been working for years to save us from exactly the types of crises these games predict. The specific moral you're supposed to glean from the fall of society differs from game to game, but it almost always pertains to drastic circumstances designed to show off the best and the worst of humanity. Dystopian games like Horizon Zero Dawn, Fallout, and Deux Ex have been widely successful over the years, drawing us into their stories with bleak warnings about the folly of man. The worlds of science and video games are both extremely concerned with the fate of humanity. ![]()
